Forklift Safety Checklist

 At Trupar America, we recommend using a forklift checklist to your operator, and managers ensure that safety programs remain on track. If you are already using a checklist, take the time to compare yours to the list we are presenting. 

If you have not yet implemented the use of a checklist, consider reviewing the list below and adapting it to your needs so it can be easily integrated as a mandatory part of your team’s daily routine. 


Visual Equipment Inspection Checklist


  1. Check the forklift for any apparent problems or missing components.
  2. Check the floor and work area for any hazards or obstacles.
  3. Check for overhead obstructions that could catch on or interfere with the overhead guard.
  4. Confirm that the fire extinguisher is present in the work area and that it is charged and working. 
  5. Inspect the battery and cable for a charge and tight connections.
  6. Check fluid levels for oil, fuel, and radiator fluid. 
  7. Check all chain anchor pins.
  8. Make sure the wheels and tires are free of damage and have proper air pressure.
  9. Check the mast, backrest, and rollers for any damage or other visible problems.
  10. Look for any fluid leaks, damp spots, or puddles on the ground.
  11. Look for wear, damage, and leaks in the hose lines.
  12. Make sure all the capacity labeling is clear.
  13. Clean out the air filter intake.
  14. Check to make sure the propane tank is secure and tight.


Operational Checklist 


  1. Check for odd sounds, roughness, and leaks in the engine.
  2. Check that all gauges are working correctly.
  3. Check the horn’s function and volume.
  4. Check that all headlights and warning lights are functioning. 
  5. Check that the seatbelts are in good working condition.
  6. Check the steering mechanism to make sure it is in good condition.
  7. Make sure the tilt and side shift mechanisms are in good condition.
  8. Check that both parking brakes and foot brakes are in good condition.


Who Should Use The Forklift Safety Checklist?


This list should be used by all of your forklift and lifting equipment operators. When compiling the list, make sure you leave room between each item to enter detailed comments about damages or other concerns.
